Living with the Millionaires, Newton MA.  The Boston Globe ran some articles yesterday in their regional sections showing where all the Millionaires live.  As is typical of the Globe, while their statistics shown were most likely accurate, they missed showing any median, which is the more important statistic.  So Newton which is a larger town in population than Weston or Wellesley shows more millionaires, but that does not mean the average person in Newton is wealthier than those in Cohassett, or Westwood, or Weston or Boston’s Back Bay.

Newton has around 85,000 residents.  It is a town made up of 13 villages with each village having it’s own distinct center and culture.  They meld together perfectly, but they retain their individual flavors. The most desired ares for the

millionaires are three, Farlow Hill, West Newton Hill and Chestnut Hill.  114 Shornecliffe Road is in Newton Corner, right on the edge of Newton Center and sits atop Farlow Hill. The street grows more luxurious as it goes up. 114 Shornecliffe is near the top of the hill and this beautiful and elegant Classical Revival house sits above the rest.  Out the third floor windows you see well south into neighboring towns in the distance.  The windows are large unlike new construction windows and well insulated.

The Milkmans son a path to your home Larry Lawfer. Lawfer grew up in Doylestown, Pa back in the days when people didn’t have need to lock their doors. A time when your neighbors left their keys in their cars. The term joy ride was created at that time, we were sure. The cars, built like tanks then (American Steel, Pittsburgh probably) and never a fatality that I remember. I digress. I had the privilege to join my father in his job, he was a home delivery milkman.  2 AM is when we woke and it is dark then. We went to the farm to pick up the truck bundled against the cold and me asking way to many questions along the way. Once the truck was loaded we would meet other early morning or late shift working dads at Ed’s Diner. I would get my hair mussed. here big and strong hands as they smiled at my Dad without acknowledging me, “Got your helper with your today.” This always sounded somewhat conspiratorial to me. It is a memory.

On the route my job was to go into the kitchen, open the refrigerator, figure out if they needed milk, butter or cottage cheese then  race back to the truck, tell my Dad who’d make note, and then I would race back into the home making sure I was quiet and respectful, didn’t wake anyone and pet the pet if there was a pet. I always took that time.  These were different times then and the thought of leaving our houses open all night so that someone could serve your needs is well gone, but back then it was magical to me. And it is why I am a Realtor® now.

I went into Colonials, Farm Houses, Tudor’s and Contemporaries.  I saw neat houses, messy houses and made friends with the pets who lived there. I loved knowing my neighbor’s and the lives they lead inside their homes. I loved speaking to a Mom or Dad who was up at those wee hours and knowing I was helping lighten their load and doing my part.  Not much has changed about that over the years. As a Realtor® I do much of the same work. I must know the homes and the people who live within is said and I know it involve so much more.
